Five Steps for Becoming Calm in the Midst of Turmoil

How to become calm in the midst of turmoil

Just how do you become calm in the midst of turmoil...

A Psalm Offering Calm in the Midst of Turmoil

Our final Psalm will be Psalm 46.  I thought it fitting as I discovered during this series just how many Psalms reiterate that God is our refuge.   Now that's encouragement!

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present[b] help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.

10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

This Psalm bookends with two often quoted verses:

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble

and

Be still, and know that I am God

No doubt about it, we live in uncertain times -  times void of calm and filled with turmoil.  I don't know if this has been the case for you, and I wonder whether it is because we are in the age of social media, but it seems that I am aware of an ever increasing amount of people who are suffering through serious, sometimes unimaginable tragedies.  I'm sure we all feel like we are in the fiery furnace from time to time.

I wrote about how trials can be used to bring about peace in my blog post Trials that Usher in Peace which you can read HERE.

                      FIVE STEPS FOR BECOMING CALM                        IN THE MIDST OF TURMOIL

So the next time you feel anything but calm - finding yourself in turmoil due to a trial or difficult situation...

Remember that even if the Earth were to give way and the mountains were to physically move into the sea, God IS present; He WILL help and He WILL provide refuge and strength.

Allow your mind to lift to thoughts of the Holy Habitation of God - for there is your refuge... Envision the Lord on His thrown in the midst of the City of God.

How to become calm in the midst of turmoil.

Rest in the Truth that You are His chosen One.  You are His precious child.  The God of the universe fought for you even unto death; Jesus death on the cross.

Recall that the Lord will not allow anything to move you.  He will hem you into His fortress.

Call to mind all the works the Lord has done, both in Biblical times, but also in your life and that of your brothers and sisters in the Lord.

A calm will then come over you at which time you will realize that you have become calm in the midst of turmoil.  For when we are truly still before the Lord, we feel His presence most and hear His still small voice.

Rejoice!  The Lord is with you!  He will make you calm in the midst of turmoil!

  2. I love how you pointed out the bookends to this Psalm. It's as if God is reminding us that we can be still and trust Him BECAUSE He is our refuge and strength. What a timely reminder this week as we see so many facing the devastation of Hurricane Dorian. God continues to be our refuge through any storm.
    Blessings to you!

  3. I needed the reminder of this Psalm, Karen. Thank you. It's such a comfort to know that no matter what happens in this world, we have our Refuge and Fortress to flee to and be safe. It's also a great reminder to remember He is God and has all things in control, no matter how messed up this world or our lives may be. Love and blessings to you!
