6 Absolute Truths to Remember When Your Faith is Shaken

What you should do when your faith is shaken

Has there ever been in a time in your life when your faith was shaken to its very core?  When tragic circumstances, lasting trials, unanswered prayer or doubts caused you to feel that God had abandoned you and what's the use of believing anyway?  Whether you have experienced this or not, there could come a time in your life when your faith will be shaken.  No matter where you fall in the spectrum, I believe if you remember the following 6 absolute Truths, your faith will not be shaken.

Remember - A Faith that is shaken will be strengthened by the Word of God

There is so much comfort built into the Word of God.

For me personally, when I am in the midst of trials and uncertainties, I can always count on verses of Scripture to first and foremost redirect my thoughts from self and circumstances, to a God who knows my thoughts even when I may not understand them myself, and second to bring about a peace that indeed surpasses all understanding.

Just last night I was coming off of a very busy ministry week where I had not made the time to be in the Word for my own personal study, and let me tell you, I was feeling it!  On top of that, I have a situation that has been weighing heavy on my mind and has been shaking my faith a bit.  I knew that by opening the Word of God, my shaken faith would be strengthened and that the Lord would calm my fears.

And so I pulled out my Psalter, and where I don't normally this, I just opened it up and wherever the pages landed, I read.  And let me tell you, as I began to read the Psalm I opened to, the Lord spoke to me in a profound and mighty way, one that spoke directly to the fears that were shaking my faith.  [Look forward to a future blog post on what the Lord showed me.  ;-) ]

When your faith is shaken, remember to turn to your Bibles and read.  The Lord will give clarity to tragic circumstances, perseverance for lasting trials, reassurance that He hears your prayers and answers to that which you are doubting.

Remember - A Faith that is shaken will be upheld by the Power of God

When your faith is shaken, remembering the fact that God is omnipotent {all powerful} will uphold you through the storm.

"Omnipotence means all-powerful. ... Being omnipotent, God has power over wind, water, gravity, physics, etc. God's power is infinite, or limitless."

If God has power over the wind, gravity and physics, things that the human mind can study, but might not truly understand except for the fact that they feel the wind and know that gravity is holding them down, we can know that even though we can't see God or feel Him, we experience His power through all of these things and so much more, for God's power is limitless.

God's power is limitless.  He certainly has the power to uphold your shaken faith and restore your confidence in Him.

The Lord understands your weaknesses.  He does not chastise you for them, but is compassionate and loving to show you His ways and His power.  But you need to acknowledge Him as a powerful and faithful God.  If you are only focusing on your trials or doubts, you are not looking to the power of God to accomplish all that concerns you.   By understanding that the power of God works in and through you, your faith will not be shaken.

When your faith is shaken, remember Who upholds you by His righteous right hand.  It is the Lord Almighty whose power created you and sustains you.

Remember - A Faith that is shaken will be in the protective presence of the Lord

It's not always easy to remember, ESPECIALLY in the midst of trials or consumed by doubt, that as children of God, we are constantly in the presence of the Lord.  His Word tells us that there is no place we can go where He is not with us.

Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
 if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.  Even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast. Even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
Psalm 139:8

I love the phrase from this verse, "your right hand will hold me fast".   To me it conjures up a father tenderly holding a tiny baby, fully enveloped in his strong arms, held close to his heart, and protected from any harm.

When you remember that your Heavenly Father holds you in the same way, even when your faith is shaken, you will rest in the fact that He will steady you when your faith is shaken, and His protective presence will go with you through the storm and guide you into all understanding.

Remember - A Faith that is shaken will be covered by the Grace of God

The title of my blog, Growing Together in Grace and Knowledge, actually opened up my eyes to what it means to truly grow in grace, and I confess, I didn't have a full handle on the definition of grace.

At the moment of salvation, the Grace of God makes us right with God.  We have received unmerited favor from Him.

But as we grow in grace, God's continued favor rests upon us.   One of the ways that grace is multiplied to us is through trials and even doubts.

I found this portion from a definition of "Divine Grace" which stated to impart strength to endure trial and resist temptation

When you remember that God's favor rests upon you through His Grace even when your faith is shaken, any shame you are personally feeling or any disillusionment you are having with God that you are then feeling guilty about, you can know that He will redeem that shaken faith and bring you through like refined gold through fire.

But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.
Job 23:10

Remember - A Faith that is shaken IS loved by God

This might be one of the most important absolute truths to remember when your faith is shaken.  Because let's face it, a shaken faith is probably not feeling so loved by God.

When you have been suffering for a long time or when a prayer has gone unanswered for years or when doubts about your faith keep creeping in, no matter how you may be feeling about God, the Lord STILL loves you!  Nothing can change that!

If we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
2 Timothy 2:13

The children of God have been created in the image of God.  As such, you are ETERNALLY loved by God!  NOTHING can take that love away from you!

When you remember that God loves you even when your faith is shaken, that shaken faith will turn around to fortified faith.  For His love sheds light on ALL Truth and will dispel the lies that shook your faith in the first place.

Remember - A Faith that is shaken will never be forsaken by God

As I've shared many times before here on the blog, my life verse is Deuteronomy 31:6.

Be strong and courageous.
Do not be afraid or terrified because of them,
for the Lord your God goes with you;
he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Those circumstances that shake your faith can be downright terrifying!

I recently went through a situation where I was waiting for medical test results that were warranted due to a finding on my physical examination.   To say I was terrified might be an understatement as my mind wondered to very dark places.  Yet, I fought to hold onto the above verse reminding myself that no matter what, the Lord would be with me and that He would never leave me or forsake me.  I may have had to re-remind myself of this 20 times a day, but I kept at it.  "God will never leave me or forsake me."   In the end, the Lord answered my prayers and the prayers of the faithful, and my tests results were completely normal!  Praise God!

When your faith is shaken, remember this promise that the Lord will not forsake you.  When you focus on this Truth, you will feel Him supply your courage and strength, and your faith with sore!

I'd like to close with a familiar hymn that will help you to remember the 6 absolute Truths we have talked about today for turning a shaken faith into a firm faith.

How Firm a Foundation

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.”

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.”

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.”

“E’en down to old age all My people shall prove
My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love;
And then, when grey hairs shall their temples adorn,
Like lambs they shall still in My bosom be borne.”

“The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake!”

I find that singing hymns to myself helps me in many anxious times.  The act of singing seems to brand God's Truths to my heart.  May this hymn do the same for you when your faith is shaken.

My hope is that ultimately, as you continually remember and meditate on these 6 absolute Truths, that your faith will not be shaken again, and that these truths will be so ingrained in you, that your faith will not waver, but will sore when trials come again.

  2. Oh, how thankful I am that your test results were normal! This post resonated SO much with me. As you know, we have been in such intensely-heated fiery trials for SO long, and YES, my faith has been shaken to the core over and over again. I told the Lord the other day that I just cannot fight anymore. I just don't have the strength. I fell backward into His arms, and it is up to Him to sustain me. I am so thankful, as you pointed out, that He still loves us even when we can't go on another step. I keep thinking of something in the Bible I read about when "our flesh fails." That is truly where I am. But, thank God, when our flesh fails, we are still in HIS arms, and He carries us when we cannot walk. This post was so precious to me today on so many levels. Thank you, dear friend, for always being faithful to press forward and do what God has called you to do. You are making such an eternal difference. Much love and gratitude to you today, and may the heavy burdens you are carrying be lifted, in Jesus' name.
