The Comfort of God's Wrath

How the comfort of God's wrath makes you an overcomer.

How Do We Find Comfort in God's Wrath?

Today we will be exploring the idea that there is indeed comfort in God's Wrath.

This post was born out of my recent study of the names and attributes of God.  Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing a few specific attributes that left me with new and encouraging insights about our Great God and Father.

I'm starting out this series by focusing on the wrath of God.  You might be thinking, "Whoa!  Karen!  Really??  Where is there encouragement in that, ESPECIALLY as your first focus??"

I promise, there is!!

The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies.  The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers.  The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it.  Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.  The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.
Nahum 1:2-8

As you read these verses, it does seem quite fearful to fall into the hands of an angry God, but I was so struck with how the passage ends...

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him...

God's Wrath Works on Our Behalf

We, the children of God, have been sealed for the day of redemption.  Jesus already took upon Himself the wrath that was due us.  We have no need to fear God's wrath because Jesus endured it all on the cross when He died for you and for me.

Yet God's wrath still exists for you and for me, but for our aide, help and comfort...

When we are struggling with worldly people, temptations or spiritual warfare, God's wrath will not stand for it.  He intervenes, fighting on our behalf, His wrath destroying the foe that is menacing us.  When we, as Believers, sense that we are falling prey to evil or evil forces and succumbing, we can cry out to the Lord for His rescue.  The Lord will immediately step in to re-direct and save us from the enemy in whatever form we are suffering.  God is our ever-present help in times of trouble.  He is our refuge and safe-haven.

But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you
and protect you from the evil one.
2 Thessalonians 3:3

The wrath of God already ushered in our ultimate salvation through Christ's death on the cross, where Satan, sin and death were overcome once and for all.

God's Wrath Makes Us Overcomers

In the same way, God's wrath makes us overcomers each and every day, for He is a jealous God who will not allow His children to suffer at the hands of the enemy, but rather will avenge the taunter of our souls.

The Lord has already invested so much into His children!  {I will talk more about this next week.}

He will not allow us to be destroyed.

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man;
but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,
but with the temptation will also make the way of escape,
 that you may be able to bear it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13

God's wrath is bigger than any temptation or spiritual warfare that attempts to take us down.  As the passage from Nahum promises, He will make a complete end of the adversaries, and will pursue His enemies into darkness.

Oh what a comfort is found in God's wrath.  For we are encircled by the strong arms of the Lord.

The eternal God is a dwelling place,
And underneath are the everlasting arms;
And He drove out the enemy from before you, And said, 'Destroy!'
Deuteronomy 33:27

  1. I love studying the names of God, He wrapped them up in Jesus, personally, I believe wrath was poured on Him or none of us would saved. His names have a lot of power and love, enjoy your study, I hope to see more.
