Be with me Lord

Be with me Lord is a prayer God delights to answer. The Bible promises that God is our ever-present help in times of trouble.

Be With Me Lord - A Simple, but Powerful Prayer

Have you ever whispered a simple prayer saying "be with me Lord"?  A simple prayer that is extremely powerful.

I have recently begun a study through several of the Psalms where I find that the psalmists are often praying "be with me Lord" maybe not in so many words, but their intent is just the same.  Through their impassioned pleas to the Lord, we see God making His presence known each and every time.

Be With Me Lord - A Prayer God Delights to Answer

One of the more powerful Psalms showcasing God's steady promise to the utterance of the words, be with me Lord, is Psalm 91.

Psalm 91

My Refuge and My Fortress

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say[a] to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
    and see the recompense of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
    the Most High, who is my refuge[b]—
10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
    no plague come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;
    the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.

14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
    I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble;
    I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

As I was reading through this Psalm a little while ago, I was struck with how the Psalmist states that when we dwell in the shelter of the Most High, we will abide in the shadow of the almighty.

Indeed.  When we dwell with the Lord - truly soaking in His Word, His promises and His character, the Lord will overshadow us with His love and provision.  Be with me Lord...

We need not fear anything.  We are safe in Him.  {I wrote more about our safety in Christ in my blog post The Safest Place to Be which you can read HERE where I talk about safety that is found in God's control and sovereignty.}

Even when chaos ensues, stressful situations arise, and deadlines loom, when we seek refuge in our Promise-Keeping God, we will not be effected by that which goes on around us.  Be with me Lord...

Be with me Lord is a prayer God delights to answer. The Bible promises that God is our ever-present help in times of trouble.

Just by calling out to God, He is instantly present and listening.  Be with me Lord...

He WILL be with us in trouble and He WILL rescue us.

We are perfectly protected with His calming presence even in the storms of life - as if the sun was shining, the birds were singing and the gentle breezes were blowing.

Many years ago, when I had first returned to church, but hadn't given my life to Christ yet, my favorite hymn that the organist would play was Be With Me Lord:

Refrain:
Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.
Be with me, Lord, I pray.

1. You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord Most High,
who abide in the shadow of our God,
say to the Lord, "My refuge and fortress,
the God in whom I trust."

2. No evil shall befall you, no pain come near,
for the angels stand close by your side,
guarding you always and bearing you gently,
watching over your life.

3. Those who cling to the Lord live secure in God's love;
lifted high those who trust in God's name.
Call on the Lord, who will never forsake you,
God will bring you salvation and joy.

Text: Psalm 91
Music: Marty Haugen (1980)

I found immense comfort in this hymn.

It's absolutely beautiful both lyrically and musically.  Please enjoy!

  1. Oh, my, this is one of my favorite Psalms of all! It is hard to pick out favorites, as all 150 of them are so wonderful, but this one has sustained me through many hard places. I often quote verse 10 to the Lord when I am praying. Your Mom's photo is just amazing!!! I so enjoyed visiting with you today, dear friend. I want you to know I am praying for you and your health and trusting Jesus to send the healing you need. You are going to be okay, in Jesus' name. There are such wonderful things ahead for you, and I believe with all my heart, God closed the door on the job to remove you from the stress, and now you are going to see those wonderful things and experience them in this new season of life.
