Wednesday Worship - October 21, 2015


Welcome back to Wednesday Worship!

Today's hymn spotlight, It is Well with My Soul, written by Horatio Spafford, is probably the hymn that moves me to tears the most often.  It seems that whenever I am going through a particularly rough time, it is then that the Lord providentially plans for the Worship team to sing It is Well with My Soul.  As the words to the hymn build, my spirit is broken in worship of my God...

The story behind the writing of this hymn is tragic.  Horatio Spafford was a devout Christian and faithful student of the Scriptures.  Dwight L. Moody was actually one of his friends.  He was also a wealthy Chicago lawyer.  He lived in a beautiful home with his wife, four daughters and a son.

At the height of Horatio's financial and professional success, his young son died tragically.  Shortly thereafter, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed most of his real estate investments.

Horatio scheduled a boat trip for his wife and daughters to give them a much needed vacation to recover from the tragedies.  He stayed behind to finish up some business only to receive news that the boat had been involved in a collision and all four of his daughters drowned - only his wife survived.  Horatio boarded a ship to meet his grieving wife in England.  It was on that trip that he penned those now famous words, "When sorrow like sea billows roll; it is well, it is well with my soul."

For more than a century, the tragic story of one man has given hope to countless thousands who have lifted their voices to sing, It Is Well With My Soul...

  1. I love your Wednesday Worship feature. I love this hymn. I love that not too long ago, my 16-year-old daughter Facebook-messaged me to send me a link to a Bethel Music version of it. (This is how we operate in the modern age when she's upstairs on her laptop and I'm down at my desktop.:) ) And I love that a few weeks ago, we sang it together as a duet in church.       Awe. lol. How special that you and your daughter sang that as a duet.

      I had never heard Bethel's version of it until tonight. It is absolutely beautiful! I think this is the version my own daughter had told me I need to listen to. :-) The "It is well" stanza gives me chills!! Thank you so much for sharing the link!!
